Susan M. Widmayer, Ph.D.
Founder and Executive Director
Susan M. Widmayer, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist and the Executive Director of the Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center, Inc. located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She received her Ph.D. in Psychology in 1979 from the University of Miami and worked at the University’s School of Medicine until relocating to Broward County, Florida to establish the Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center in 1983. The Center provides extensive developmental follow-up, medical care, comprehensive case management and early intervention services to over 11,000 medically fragile infants, children and adolescents with disabilities and chronic illnesses in Broward County. In addition, she mobilized local, state and federal funds to establish the Comprehensive Pediatrics Aids Project at CDTC in 1991. The Center was designated as a “Center of Excellence” by the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau, Department of Health and Human Services in 2001. Dr. Widmayer has made substantial contributions toward the understanding of child health and development conducting and publishing extensive studies. She has been a consultant to the National Institutes of Health. The Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center, Inc. is now the largest non-university clinical research site in the country. Dr. Widmayer has received many awards, the most recent of which were the Outstanding Mother of 2008 awarded by the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County, Inc., the Advocate of Distinction Award, Florida’s Voice on Developmental Disabilities in 2007, and the Sun-Sentinel Publisher’s Community Service Award for Outstanding Community Leadership in 2006.


Ana E. Calderon, Ph.D.
Assistant Administrator
Ana E. Calderon holds a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Virginia. She has been with CDTC for the past 20 years and has extensive experience in overseeing the clinical programs and overall administrative operations of the Center.


Stewart Wechsler, C.P.A.
Director of Finance
Mr. Wechsler joined CDTC in 2001 as Director of Finance & Operations. He is responsible for overseeing all financial & facility operations of the Center. Mr. Wechsler received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a major in Accounting Information Systems, and a Master of Accounting degree from Florida Atlantic University.  In addition, Mr. Wechsler is currently licensed in the State of Florida as a Certified Public Accountant. Prior to joining CDTC, Mr Wechsler served as CFO for a number of Florida healthcare staffing and practice management firms.

Ana Hernandez-Puga, M.D.
Primary Care Clinic and Medical Home Programs
Ana M. Hernandez-Puga, MD, is medical director of primary care at Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Her area of expertise is providing medical care for children with special health care needs. She is also medical consultant to several foster care agencies in Broward County including Kids in Distress.

She is the medical director for a grant based on the medical home model from Broward County Children’s Services Administration supporting enhanced services through the Center’s pediatric special needs clinic. These services include medical social work, health education, nutritional counseling and developmental evaluations. Dr. Hernandez-Puga is also a subinvestigator for multiple trials at CDTC.

Dr Hernandez-Puga earned her medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine in Florida and completed her residency in pediatrics at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.


Ana Puga, M.D.
Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialist
Comprehensive Family AIDS Program & Research
Dr. Ana M. Puga is the Medical Director of the Comprehensive Family AIDS Program (CFAP) of the Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center, Inc., Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Her work in the CFAP program is to ensure the integration of a multidisciplinary system by promoting incorporation of medical care, social services, mental health therapy, substance abuse treatment, and dental care to over 1000 families with HIV in Broward County.

Dr. Puga is trained in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and is responsible for the care of almost 450 HIV positive women and 350 HIV exposed and/or infected infants, children and teens. Also, Dr. Puga provides HIV perinatal medication counseling to pregnant women referred from both of Broward County’s prenatal care centers for uninsured women.

Dr. Puga received her medical training at Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico. She completed her residency in Pediatrics and fellowship in Infectious Diseases as well as a postgraduate fellowship in HIV at the Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami Medical Center in Miami, Florida.
